WHAT WE DO

TRANSFORMING LIVES, EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES

Our transformative approach to post-incarceration support emphasizes continuous assistance during employment rather than solely focusing on pre-employment readiness. Through collaborative efforts, we are committed to facilitating a seamless transition for individuals returning from incarceration. Our Friday night classes serve as a gateway to Union careers. To enhance engagement, we organize unique in-person gatherings six times a year, bringing together Trade Union representatives and individuals with diverse incarceration experiences. These gatherings foster discussions on high-wage careers, apprenticeship programs, and occupational skills training.

Prioritizing life skills, our goal extends beyond job placement to ensure excellence and leadership in chosen careers. By leveraging community resources, we establish a supportive peer mentoring environment that empowers San Diegans towards lasting change and success.

HOW'S IT DONE?

Core Principles

WEEKLY

LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS

We guide individuals in mastering crucial abilities like interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, financial literacy, and emotional intelligence. Tailored for those navigating life post-incarceration, our program helps participants to confidently face challenges.

MONTHLY GATHERINGS

Our monthly dinners provide a space for meaningful connection and community building. These gatherings offer a platform for individuals to share experiences, insights, and support. Through shared meals, open discussions, and networking opportunities, participants have the chance to build relationships, troubleshoot challenges, and foster a sense of belonging.

REBUILDING FAMILIES

We support compassionate efforts to strengthen families navigating challenges post-incarceration. We provide guidance on communication, conflict resolution, and events to facilitate in-person opportunities for engagement to reunite and rebuild familial bonds post-incarcerarion.

ONGOING MENTORSHIP

Rooted in a commitment to fostering personal and professional growth, we create a supportive environment where participants benefit from valuable insights, advice, and encouragement. Emphasizing the power of mentorship, our initiatives aim to cultivate lasting connections and sincere guidance that contribute to resilience and success in daily life after incarceration.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We're dedicated to nurturing strong, connected communities. Focused on fostering a sense of belonging, unity, and shared responsibility, we work to create vibrant and supportive environments where individuals can thrive and contribute to the collective well-being.

UNION ENTRY

 GUIDANCE

Through our valued partnerships, we facilitate connections to the Skilled Trades, providing avenues for meaningful employment and sustainable careers. We assist in securing apprenticeship opportunities and offer focused industry-specific training for success. At HoMEwork, we are committed to bridging the gap between individuals and rewarding opportunities in Union careers.

CIVIC ENGAGAMENT

We actively participate in shaping policies that directly impact formerly incarcerated, recognizing the need for voices to be heard. Engaging at local and state government levels, our aim is to secure a seat at the table and have a direct role in shaping our political landscape.

We facilitate in-person gatherings in collaboration with representatives from diverse Building Trade Unions, alongside individuals who have experienced varying lengths of incarceration.

This distinctive setting serves as a platform for employers to engage in discussions about high-wage careers, apprenticeship programs, and occupational skills training. The atmosphere is enriched by shared meals from local businesses, creating a conducive environment for networking opportunities between Union representatives and program participants.

In partnership with 2nd Call, a Los Angeles-based community organization specializing in the personal development of high-risk individuals, we place a significant emphasis on life skills. Our program ensures that formerly incarcerated individuals not only secure employment but also excel and lead in their chosen careers. Through life skills workshops addressing anger management, financial responsibility, and behavioral skills, hoMEwork leverages the natural resources within the community, fostering a supportive peer mentoring environment.

At the core of our philosophy is the belief that communities possess the inherent resources required for sustained change and growth. Rejecting the traditional nonprofit industrial complex, hoMEwork is dedicated to empowering Southeast San Diego by amplifying the voices most impacted, fostering community healing, and promoting autonomy. Join us on this revolutionary journey towards lasting change and success.
